Gold and experience win games of Dota 2, and the players who gather them fastest usually decide who wins. This dota 2 farming guide breaks down how to squeeze more GPM and XPM out of every minute from the last-hit basics to advanced camp stacking, jungle rotations, and split-pushing on the late-game map.
Whether you queue as a hard carry or a hard support, farming efficiency directly maps to your item timings. A carry who hits a key item two minutes earlier often decides the teamfight before it starts.
What “Farming” Actually Means in Dota 2
Farming is the act of converting map time into gold and experience. Every creep, every stack, every ancient camp is a resource you can either collect or leave for the enemy.
There are three income streams you need to think about:
- Last-hits on creeps the largest and most consistent source of gold
- Neutral camps jungle and ancient camps, plus stacked camps for bonus value
- Hero kills, assists, buildings and Roshan big, spiky rewards tied to teamfights
Passive gold ticks in on its own. Everything else is earned by clicking correctly.
The Core Skill: Last-Hitting and Denying
Last-hitting is the foundation of every farming pattern in Dota 2. You only get gold for creeps you personally kill, so timing your right-click on the final blow is non-negotiable.
Denying last-hitting your own creeps when they drop below 50% HP is just as important in lane. Every denied creep is XP the enemy laner does not get, and it pushes the lane back toward your tower where you can farm safely.
Practical last-hit tips
- Turn on damage numbers and last-hit indicators in the HUD options
- Watch creep aggression, not just HP bars a creep taking two hits will die on the third
- Use your hero’s base damage number to predict the finishing hit
- Practice in demo mode for 10 minutes before ranked; muscle memory pays off fast
If you are new to the map and unsure where safe farm exists, our dota 2 map guide breaks down the lanes, jungle entrances and pull camps.
Farming by Role: Position 1 Through 5
Farming priority is not equal. The team’s economy is a hierarchy, and knowing where you sit is half the battle.
| Position | Role | Farm Priority | Main Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hard Carry | Highest | Safe lane, jungle, ancients |
| 2 | Mid | High | Mid lane, side lane rotations, small camps |
| 3 | Offlaner | Medium | Offlane creeps, offside jungle |
| 4 | Soft Support | Low | Stacks, leftovers, kill gold |
| 5 | Hard Support | Lowest | Assist gold, passive, occasional stacks |
Position 1 gets the safe lane. Position 4 and 5 should be stacking, warding and creating space so the cores can farm not stealing last-hits.

Stacking Neutral Camps: The Biggest Free Value in the Game
Stacking is when you pull a neutral camp off its spawn point right before the minute mark so a new camp spawns on top of it. Do it correctly and a carry can clear two, three, or even four camps in a single wave.
The stacking rules
- Small, medium and large camps stack at roughly :53–:55 seconds past the minute
- Ancient camps stack at around :47–:50 seconds
- The camp must be pulled far enough that the “spawn box” is clear when the minute ticks
Supports should be stacking constantly between rotations. A single stacked ancient camp can be worth 500–800 gold to a farming carry and it took you 15 seconds to set up.
Efficient Jungling and Ancient Farming
Once the laning phase ends, cores transition into the jungle. The goal is to loop between waves and camps so you are never idle.
Building a farming pattern
- Push out a lane creep wave
- While the wave walks, hit the nearby jungle camp
- Return for the next wave or a stacked camp
- Repeat, rotating between all three lanes
Farming ancients requires the right item. You typically need a strong AoE clear tool Battle Fury, Maelstrom, Radiance, or hero-specific abilities before ancients become efficient.
Neutral tokens dropped from camps also matter here. Our dota 2 neutral items guide covers which tiers spawn at which minute mark, and how to prioritize picks.
GPM and XPM: Reading Your Own Farm
Open your scoreboard. GPM and XPM are the two numbers that tell you whether your farming pattern is actually working.
Rough benchmarks for a farming core:
- Under 400 GPM at 20 minutes → farming is stalling, look at lane state and jungle uptime
- 500–600 GPM at 20 minutes → healthy pace for most carries
- 700+ GPM → dominant, snowballing game
If your GPM is low but your XPM is high, you are probably fighting too much and last-hitting too little. If both are low, you are wasting time likely walking between objectives without a plan.
Item Timings: Turning Gold Into Wins
Farming for its own sake is pointless. Every farming decision should be driven by an item timing. Ask yourself: what item wins the next fight, and when do I have it?
Common core power spikes:
- Battle Fury on cleave carries unlocks 4x farm speed
- Maelstrom / Mjollnir jungle clear plus wave clear
- Radiance passive farm and pressure
- Aghanim’s Scepter big power spike on mid heroes especially
Building the wrong item order can waste 5+ minutes of farm. Our dota 2 item guide walks through core progressions role by role.
Advanced Farming Habits That Separate Ranks
The gap between low MMR and high MMR farmers is not raw APM it is decision-making.
- Never walk empty-handed. If you are moving across the map, hit a camp on the way.
- TP scrolls are farming tools. Teleporting to a pushed lane is faster than walking to jungle.
- Cut waves before they crash. A wave crashing into your T2 tower is 40+ gold lost.
- Track enemy positions before committing to ancients. Ancient camps are deep; you die if two enemies rotate.
- Buy back only when it matters. Dying with 3,000 gold on you sets your timings back a full item.
Climbing MMR is largely about consistency here. Our dota 2 ranks guide explains what habits actually move the needle from Herald to Immortal.
Farming as a Support: You Are Not Useless
Supports farm too just differently. Your farm is stacks, kill gold, and leftover waves your cores cannot reach.
- Stack the enemy jungle when it’s safe. You deny farm and gain it.
- Take side lane creeps when your carry is on the other side of the map.
- Grab neutral tokens for utility items like Trickster Cloak or Occult Bracelet.
- Never take farm your carry is walking toward. If in doubt, block for them and move on.
For rotations, warding routes and pull timings, our dota 2 support guide covers the full support playbook.
Late Game: Split-Pushing and Farming Under Pressure
Once towers fall, farm gets riskier. The map shrinks, wards get denied, and Roshan pressure forces group play.
- Farm with a TP scroll ready at all times. No exceptions.
- Split-push with vision. Send the tankiest farmer to a side lane while your team pressures another.
- Take Roshan when your carry has BKB and your team has vision control.
- Buyback gold matters more than one extra item. Track it explicitly on your HUD.
The Bottom Line
Farming in Dota 2 is a habit, not a talent. Nail last-hitting, learn the stack timings, respect your role’s farm priority, and always tie your gold to an item timing that wins the next fight. Do those four things consistently and your GPM and your MMR will climb on their own.
