Dota 2 Map Guide: Every Key Location and Objective

dota-2-map-guide

If you still think of the map as three lanes and a jungle, you are playing a version of the game that no longer exists. Patch 7.33 rebuilt the terrain from the ground up, and this Dota 2 map guide walks you through every location, objective, and timing that decides matches in the current patch. We will cover Twin Gates, Lotus Pools, Watchers, Tormentors, Roshan, shrines, and the timings pros actually track.

The Basics: Radiant, Dire, and the Three Lanes

The map is split diagonally by the river. Radiant occupies the bottom-left, Dire occupies the top-right.

Each side has three lanes:

  • Safe lane bottom for Radiant, top for Dire. This is where the position 1 carry farms with a position 5 support.
  • Mid lane the solo mid (position 2) lane, running diagonally through the river.
  • Off lane top for Radiant, bottom for Dire. The position 3 offlaner plays here, usually with a position 4 roamer.

Creep equilibrium, pull camps, and tower proximity make the safe lane easier to farm and the off lane the “hard” lane. Winning the lane matchup is the first fight for map control.

Towers, Barracks, and the Ancient

Every lane has a chain of towers you must break to reach the enemy base.

TierLocationNotes
T1Outer laneFirst tower, easiest to push
T2Mid lane on each sideGrants gold to whole team when killed
T3Base entranceGuards the barracks
T4Inside base (x2)Flanks the Ancient

Behind each T3 sit the melee and ranged barracks. Destroy both on a lane and you unlock mega creeps on that lane a huge push toward the win. Destroy all three lanes of racks and every mega creep becomes a super creep.

The Ancient is the win condition. Kill the enemy Ancient and the game ends.

The Post-7.33 Map: What Changed

Patch 7.33 was the biggest map overhaul in Dota history. The map grew roughly 40% larger and added new features you must understand to compete.

Twin Gates

Twin Gates are paired teleporters that let heroes cross the map instantly. There are two pairs, one on each half of the map, and they let you rotate from your safe lane jungle to your off lane jungle without a TP scroll.

Key notes on Twin Gates:

  • They are neutral either team can use them.
  • Both entry and exit points are visible to both teams.
  • They have a cooldown on each hero after use.

Use them for fast rotations, smoke ganks, and escape routes when a fight goes wrong.

Lotus Pools

Two Lotus Pools sit in the river one on the Radiant side, one on the Dire side. They periodically grow Lotuses that heal HP and mana when consumed.

  • Lotuses spawn every three minutes and cap at four per pool.
  • Grabbing them denies healing to the enemy side.
  • Supports should rotate through pools on cooldown to fund tempo trades in lane.

Watchers

Watchers are neutral outposts scattered across the map. Activating one grants your team a wide vision reveal in the surrounding area for a short duration.

  • Activation is free and off cooldown at match start.
  • After use, they enter a shared cooldown.
  • They are the cheapest vision in the game always pop one before contesting an objective.

Tormentors

Tormentors are elite neutral bosses that spawn at the 20-minute mark, one on each side of the map, behind each team’s T3 towers.

  • They reflect damage you cannot burst them down solo without dying.
  • Killing a Tormentor drops a Shard for a teammate who does not already have one (Aghanim’s Shard).
  • They respawn ten minutes after being killed.

Tormentors are one of the best power spikes in the mid game. Coordinate a five-man kill after a won fight or a taken tower.

Roshan, the Aegis, and the Pit

Roshan is still the most important neutral in the game. In the current map, the Roshan pit alternates between two locations one on the Radiant side of the river and one on the Dire side. The active pit changes after each Roshan kill.

What Roshan drops

  • Aegis of the Immortal one free resurrection for the hero who lands the killing blow.
  • Cheese restores 2500 HP and 1500 mana on use, after the second Roshan.
  • Aghanim’s Blessing a permanent upgrade, drops after the third Roshan.
  • Refresher Shard refreshes cooldowns once, drops on later kills.

Roshan timings

  • First Rosh: killable from level ~15 mid-game with a real team commit.
  • Respawn: 8–11 minutes after death (random).
  • Aegis expires after five minutes if unused.

Vision on Roshan is non-negotiable. Pair your ward placements with our dota 2 warding spots breakdown so the enemy cannot sneak a smoke.

Outposts, Shrines, and Base Structures

Outposts

Two Outposts sit in the map’s outer jungle. Channel one for six seconds and your whole team gets a chunk of experience plus vision in the surrounding area.

  • Outpost XP scales with game time.
  • They tick every seven minutes once captured.
  • Contesting outposts is one of the best sources of catch-up XP for a losing team.

Shrines and Fountain

Your Fountain heals and grants mana at base and holds the buyback function. The old jungle shrines were removed healing now comes from base, Lotuses, items, and heroes.

Jungle Camps and Neutral Items

Each side of the map has small, medium, large, and ancient camps. Ancient camps hold the toughest neutrals and drop the best gold.

Neutral Items drop from jungle creeps at set timings:

TierDrop Time
Tier 17 minutes
Tier 217 minutes
Tier 327 minutes
Tier 437 minutes
Tier 560 minutes

Every player can hold one Neutral Item. Coordinate with your team so the right hero gets the right tier a Trusty Shovel is wasted on a hard carry.

Map Timings Every Player Should Memorize

These are the timers pros track from the loading screen:

  • 0:00 Horn sounds, creeps march.
  • 0:30 Bounty runes spawn, then every three minutes.
  • 2:00 Power runes spawn in the river, then every two minutes.
  • 3:00 First Lotuses ready to pick.
  • 5:00 Neutral camps begin dropping Tier 1 Neutral Items.
  • 7:00 Siege creeps join lane waves; first Neutral Item drops.
  • 20:00 Tormentors spawn.
  • ~15:00–20:00 First realistic Roshan window.

Controlling the Map: Practical Advice

  • Ward the high ground on each side of the river. Vision on rune spawns wins early ganks.
  • Rotate through Watchers before every objective push. Free vision is free.
  • Take Tormentors after winning a fight, not before. You need the tempo advantage.
  • Deny Lotuses on cooldown if your supports have the movespeed to reach the pool.
  • Track Twin Gate cooldowns a used gate means the enemy cannot escape that way for the next 60+ seconds.

Settings That Help You Read the Map

Two settings do more for your map awareness than any guide can:

  • Minimap size and hero icons on see rotations at a glance.
  • Camera edge speed and grid smoother panning across the larger map.
