The laning stage decides more games than teamfights do. This Dota 2 laning guide breaks down what winning the first 10 minutes actually looks like creep equilibrium, harass timings, pulling, and role-specific plans for every position on the map.
We wrote it for players who keep losing lane and cannot figure out why, and for grinders who want to squeeze a few extra CS and hero levels out of every game. Let’s get to work.
The Three Lanes and Who Goes Where
Dota 2 has three lanes: safelane, midlane, and offlane. The safelane is the bottom lane for Radiant and the top lane for Dire. The offlane is the mirror.
The mid lane is one hero versus one hero, and it runs down the middle of the map.
Here is the standard role setup you should expect in almost every match:
| Position | Role | Lane | Job in Lane |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hard Carry | Safelane | Farm last hits, scale into late game |
| 2 | Mid | Midlane | Win 1v1, get level and item advantage |
| 3 | Offlaner | Offlane | Survive, soak XP, disrupt enemy carry |
| 4 | Soft Support | Offlane | Enable pos 3, rotate, ward aggressively |
| 5 | Hard Support | Safelane | Protect carry, pull, buy team items |
If you are new to the position system, our dota 2 support guide walks through what each support actually does minute by minute.
The Core Concepts That Win Lanes
Before we dive into role-specific play, four ideas run through every good laning performance.
Creep Equilibrium
Creep equilibrium is where the two creep waves meet. You want that spot to be closer to your tower when you are the weaker lane, and closer to the enemy tower only when you can safely commit.
Pushing the wave into the enemy tower when you cannot dive is one of the fastest ways to feed. Creeps die under the tower, you get no last hits, and the enemy support pulls the next wave.
Last-Hitting and Denies
Cores live or die on their creep score. A good safelane carry aims for 50+ last hits by minute 10. Anything under 30 is a bad lane, full stop.
Denying your own creeps attacking them at low HP so the enemy cannot last-hit them cuts their gold and experience. Denies count for half XP to the enemy, which stings mid especially hard.
Aggro Manipulation
Right-clicking an enemy hero while your creeps are nearby pulls their aggro onto you. This is called “drawing creep aggro,” and it is how you pull the wave back toward your tower without missing farm.
Use it every time the wave is drifting too far up the lane.
Vision
Wards decide who can play aggressively and who has to sit back. A single well-placed observer on a high-ground pull camp or rune spot changes the whole matchup. Our dota 2 warding spots breakdown covers the exact tiles that matter.
Safelane: Position 1 and Position 5
The safelane is a two-hero lane where the carry farms and the hard support keeps them alive.
Pos 1 Priorities
- Never miss a last hit you can reach safely. Watch the creep HP bars, not the enemy hero.
- Stay behind your creep line until you have a level or item advantage.
- Take the bounty rune at 0:00 and 4:00 if it is on your side of the map.
- Do not chase harass. If the offlaner clicks you and runs into their trees, let them go.
Pos 5 Priorities
The hard support does everything the carry does not have time for. That means pulling the small camp at :15 and :45 marks to control the wave, harassing the enemy offlaner off the ranged creep, and stacking the ancient or hard camp when the lane is safe.
Pull timings matter. A successful pull at :15 reset resets the wave equilibrium and denies XP from a full creep wave to the enemy offlaner.
Midlane: The 1v1 Duel
Mid is the most mechanically punishing lane. You are alone against one enemy, and every missed CS or bad rune shows on the scoreboard.
The First Wave
Block the ranged creep on your side of the river to slow your wave down. This puts equilibrium closer to your tower, which is what you want against most matchups.
If you are playing a lane bully like Viper or Razor, you can skip the block and shove instead force the enemy to farm under tower and miss last hits.
Rune Control
Water runes spawn at 2:00 and 4:00. Power runes start at 6:00 and spawn every two minutes at both river spots. Losing rune control is losing mid, because runes give free regen, mobility, or damage that swing the next wave.
Ward the enemy side of the river when you can, and always contest the 6:00 rune.
Bottle Management
Bottle is standard on almost every mid hero. Refill it in your fountain, or by grabbing a rune, and never let it sit empty when you are low HP.
Offlane: Position 3 and Position 4
The offlane is the hardest lane in the game because you are pushed against three neutral camps with no easy pull and often facing two enemies.
Pos 3 Priorities
Your job is not to farm your job is to survive, hit level 6, and disrupt the enemy carry. Get XP from the wave even if you miss the gold. A level 6 offlaner with an ult online is worth more than a 20-CS offlaner with no ult.
Good offlaners like Mars, Underlord, and Tidehunter are strong because they tank harass and force the enemy pos 5 to spend mana.
Pos 4 Priorities
The pos 4 makes the offlane playable. That means:
- Contesting the pull camp by warding it or blocking it
- Zoning the enemy pos 5 off the XP range
- Rotating to mid for a smoke gank as soon as you can leave lane
Pos 4 is the earliest tempo role in the game. If you sit in lane past minute 5 with nothing happening, you are wasting the slot.
Lane Matchups: Who Beats Who
Not every lane is winnable straight up. Knowing your matchup tells you whether to play aggressive, farm safe, or call for a rotation.
| Matchup Type | Play Style | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Melee carry vs ranged offlane | Play back, freeze wave | Wraith King vs Batrider |
| Ranged carry vs melee offlane | Push and harass | Drow Ranger vs Axe |
| Kill lane vs greedy carry | Freeze and survive | Bane + Clockwerk vs Spectre |
| Mid vs burst mid | Skill mana regen, block wave | Storm Spirit vs Lina |

The First 10 Minutes: A Minute-by-Minute Plan
Here is the checklist we run in our head every game.
- 0:00 Grab bounty rune, block the wave (if applicable), pos 4 or 5 pulls prep
- 0:30 First creep wave meets, last hits begin
- 1:00 First pull attempt for safelane support
- 2:00 First water rune, first tango/salve trades
- 4:00 Second bounty rune, most supports have first item component
- 6:00 First power rune, mid usually hits level 6, first gank attempt
- 8:00 Offlane tier 1 often threatened, junglers start staying camp
- 10:00 Laning phase officially ends, roles transition to farming and fighting
If you are winning your lane but losing the map at 10 minutes, you are not converting your advantage. Push a tower, take a Roshan scout ward, or crash into the enemy jungle.
Common Mistakes That Lose Lanes
We see the same errors on every replay from players stuck below Ancient.
- Auto-attacking creeps out of habit. This pushes the wave and gives the enemy free farm under tower.
- Skipping the bounty rune. That is 40+ gold and a small XP boost you leave on the map.
- Fighting without vision. No ward means no rotation info means no reason to be aggressive.
- Buying wrong starting items. Check what harass you are facing before you leave the fountain our dota 2 item guide covers early-game buys for every role.
- Ignoring TP scroll. Every core should have a Town Portal Scroll by minute 2. No exceptions.
Adjusting for Your Rank
Laning at Herald looks nothing like laning at Divine. In lower brackets, the enemy will over-extend and misplay wave management, so punish greed with kills rather than perfect CS. In higher brackets, expect coordinated pulls, smoke ganks by minute 3, and supports who deny their own ranged creep on cooldown.
If you are not sure where you sit or how the ladder works, our dota 2 ranks guide explains the MMR system and what each medal actually means.
The Bottom Line
Winning lane in Dota 2 comes down to four things: wave control, last-hitting, vision, and knowing your matchup. Everything else item timings, rotations, tempo flows from those fundamentals.
Practice one role at a time. Watch your own replays with the minimap in view. Count your CS at 10 minutes. That single habit will move your MMR more than any hero pick.
