If you have ever stared at the shop for 20 seconds while your creep wave dies, you need a proper dota 2 item guide. Items decide fights more than farm does, and knowing what to build (and when) is the single fastest way to climb MMR. We break down every major category — starting items, boots, situational cores, and luxury pickups — so you always know what to click.
How the Dota 2 Shop Works
The shop is split into two tabs: the Basic Shop (available in the base) and the Secret Shop (found in the Radiant and Dire jungles). Consumables and low-tier components sit in the Basic Shop, while high-cost recipes and rare parts like Reaver, Ultimate Orb, and Demon Edge live in the Secret Shop.
Every item is either:
- A component (buys into bigger items)
- A finished item (has its own active or passive)
- A neutral item (dropped by neutral creeps in tiers)
Understanding component paths is the whole game. Buying Ring of Health early because you plan to build Vanguard is smart. Buying it because it “gives regen” is how you lose lane.
Starting Items by Role
Your first 625 gold sets the tone for the entire laning phase. Here is what each of the five positions typically opens with.
| Position | Common Starting Items |
|---|---|
| Pos 1 (Safelane Carry) | Quelling Blade, Tango, Slippers of Agility, Circlet, Branches |
| Pos 2 (Mid) | Tango, Faerie Fire, Bottle (after runes), Branches, Mantle of Intelligence |
| Pos 3 (Offlane) | Quelling Blade, Tango, Gauntlets, Branches, Salve |
| Pos 4/5 (Supports) | Tango, Observer Wards, Sentry Wards, Salve, Clarity, Enchanted Mango |
Key tip: Supports should always start with an Observer Ward set. Vision wins lanes, and if you are still learning where to place them, our dota 2 warding spots breakdown covers every high-impact ward location.
Attribute Items: Bracer, Wraith Band, Null Talisman
These are the three “circlet items” and they are stronger than they look. Each combines a Gauntlet/Slippers/Mantle with a Circlet and a recipe.
- Bracer — Strength-based, gives HP and damage. Great for melee cores and durable supports.
- Wraith Band — Agility-based, gives attack speed and damage. Standard on ranged carries.
- Null Talisman — Intelligence-based, gives spell amp and mana. The go-to for casters.
All three now upgrade at level 15 into stronger versions, so keeping one in your inventory into the mid-game is actually valuable.
Boots: Your First Real Item Decision
Every hero needs boots. The question is which boots.
| Boots | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Power Treads | 1350 | Right-clickers, mana-flexible cores |
| Arcane Boots | 500 (recipe) | Supports, mana-hungry mids |
| Tranquil Boots | 925 | Offlaners, sustain-heavy supports |
| Phase Boots | 1300 | Melee carries who need pickoff speed |
| Boots of Bearing | Upgrade path | Team-fight supports (from Drum) |
| Guardian Greaves | Upgrade path | Frontline heroes needing team heals |
Power Treads attribute-switching (toggling between Strength for HP and Intelligence for mana) is a core habit for any position 1 or 2 player.
Core Fighting Items
These are the items you see almost every game because they solve real problems.
Black King Bar (BKB)
Spell immunity for 5–9 seconds, decreasing each time you buy it. This item wins fights. If the enemy has stacked disables (Faceless Void, Enigma, Magnus), BKB is not optional.
Blink Dagger
Short cooldown blink that resets on damage. The initiator’s best friend. Standard on Magnus, Tidehunter, Legion Commander, and any hero whose ultimate needs positioning.
Aghanim’s Scepter
Upgrades a hero’s ultimate or grants a new ability. Every hero has one. Some (Zeus, Silencer, Puck) are game-changing. Others are situational. Check the tooltip before rushing it.
Aghanim’s Shard
A 1400-gold ability upgrade unlocked at minute 20 or by buying directly. Usually a strong power spike for a small cost.
Situational Cores
Against Physical Damage
- Blade Mail — Reflects damage. Deters right-clickers.
- Crimson Guard — Block damage in an AoE. Team-fight staple.
- Assault Cuirass — Armor aura, minus-armor debuff on attacks.
Against Magic Damage
- Pipe of Insight — Magic barrier for your team.
- Glimmer Cape — Instant invis and magic resist. A must-have on many supports.
- Lotus Orb — Reflects targeted spells and dispels.
Against Mobile Heroes
- Scythe of Vyse (Hex) — 3.5s hard disable through BKB pierce logic (some spell interactions).
- Orchid / Bloodthorn — Silence plus bonus damage on Bloodthorn.
- Eul’s Scepter of Divinity — Cyclones an enemy (or yourself) for 2.5s.
Sange and Yasha Family
The tri-item split from Sange, Yasha, and Kaya remains one of the strongest build paths in Dota 2.
- Sange & Yasha — Movement, attack speed, status resist.
- Kaya & Sange — Spell amp, HP, status resist.
- Yasha & Kaya — Movement, attack speed, spell amp.
Pick based on whether your hero right-clicks, casts, or does both.
Neutral Items
Neutral items drop from neutral creeps starting at 7 minutes and come in five tiers. They are shared team resources — do not hoard tier 1 trash when your carry needs an Occult Bracelet. New items in recent patches include Kobold Cup, Chipped Vest, Polliwog Charm, and Dormant Curio.
For patch-specific quirks and issues affecting neutral drops, our dota 2 patch 7.41e bugs page tracks what is currently broken.
Support-Specific Items
Support builds are less about damage and more about utility. Priority pickups for position 4 and 5:
- Magic Wand — Cheap, saves lives.
- Wind Lace / Tranquil Boots — Movement is survival.
- Glimmer Cape — Save a core, save the game.
- Force Staff — Repositioning tool. Never leaves your inventory.
- Aghanim’s Shard — Cheap power spike at minute 20.

Luxury / Late-Game Items
Once you have your BKB and core damage, the game opens up.
- Divine Rapier — 400 damage. Drops on death. High risk, higher reward.
- Butterfly — Evasion, agility, attack speed for agility carries.
- Daedalus — Crit item for pure damage cores.
- Satanic — Lifesteal + active dispel + huge Strength.
- Heart of Tarrasque — Massive HP and out-of-combat regen.
- Refresher Orb — Resets all cooldowns. Game-ending on the right heroes.
Common Mistakes We See in Ranked
- Skipping BKB because “I have Manta.” Manta does not dispel Chronosphere.
- Rushing luxury items before survivability. A 6-slotted carry with no BKB is a fed courier.
- Ignoring the Shard. It is 1400 gold. Buy it.
- Wrong boots. Phase on a caster, Arcane on a right-clicker. Match the item to the hero.
If you are stuck in the lower brackets and item choices are part of why, our dota 2 ranks guide explains what each MMR bracket looks like and what habits move you up.
Item Timings That Matter
Good players do not just build the right items — they build them on time. Rough benchmarks for a solid game:
| Item | Target Timing (Core) |
|---|---|
| Boots of Speed | 4–6 min |
| Bottle / Magic Wand | 6–8 min |
| Power Treads | 10–13 min |
| BKB | 18–25 min |
| First big item (Manta, Radiance, etc.) | 20–28 min |
| Aghanim’s Scepter | 25–35 min |
Miss these by more than 3–4 minutes and you are behind for that hero.
The Bottom Line
Items in Dota 2 are not a shopping list — they are answers to problems. Identify the enemy’s win condition, then build the item that shuts it down. BKB against disables. Pipe against magic. Hex against mobile carries. Everything else follows from there.
