PUBG Ghillie Suit: How to Get It and Use It

pubg ghillie suit

The PUBG ghillie suit is the single most recognisable piece of camouflage in battle royale, and on PC it is still a care-package-only item that can swing a late circle on its own. In this guide we break down where it spawns, which map-specific variants exist, and how to use it without getting killed the second you move.

If you are brand new to the game, start with our PUBG beginner guide and come back here once you are confident with looting and positioning.

What a Ghillie Suit Actually Is

A ghillie suit is a camouflage garment covered in loose strips of fabric, netting and burlap designed to break up the human silhouette. The name comes from Scottish Highland gamekeepers, the “ghillies”, who wore similar cloaks to stalk poachers in the 19th century. Military snipers adopted the design, and PUBG lifted it almost directly into its loot pool.

In PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS on PC, the ghillie suit is a full-body skin that occupies every armour slot’s cosmetic layer at once. It does not give armour, does not increase damage resistance, and does not reduce bullet damage. The only thing a ghillie suit does is make you harder to see.

That is also the only thing you need it to do.

Where to Find a Ghillie Suit in PUBG

The ghillie suit is not floor loot. You cannot find one in a house, a compound, a loot crate on the ground, or any standard spawn location. There is exactly one way to get one in a normal match:

  • Care packages (red smoke airdrops). The ghillie suit is one of the possible rare items inside the flare-called or map-dropped supply crates.

That rarity is the whole point. If you want to play around ghillie suits, you need to play around airdrops: hearing the plane, spotting the red smoke, and deciding whether the loot is worth the fight. Our PUBG tips and tricks guide covers crate baiting in more detail.

Map Variants: Woodland, Desert, Snow and More

PUBG uses different ghillie models depending on which map the care package drops on, so the suit blends into that specific environment. The visual variants include:

MiramarDesert tanSand, dry rock, dead scrub
SanhokJungle greenDense foliage, tall grass

The suit you receive is tied to the map you are playing. You cannot pick a desert ghillie into an Erangel match. If you want to see how each environment plays, our full PUBG map guide breaks down the terrain on all of them.

A note that comes up often on community threads: some players have pointed out that certain variants, especially the Miramar desert ghillie, have historically used older models that look dated next to newer map art. Krafton has adjusted ghillie visuals over multiple patches, so the exact look you see may differ from older screenshots.

How to Actually Use a Ghillie Suit

Putting on a ghillie suit does not make you invisible. It makes you blend in when you are not moving. Players burn their suit all the time by sprinting across a road or crouch-walking in the open. Here is how to get real value out of it.

Stay Still

The single biggest rule. A ghillie suit at a standstill in matching cover is almost impossible to spot past 50 metres. The same suit sprinting across a field is a flapping neon sign, because motion is what human eyes are built to catch.

  • Pick your spot and commit. Lie prone in grass, against a tree trunk, or next to a bush of the same colour family.
  • Hold angles, do not patrol. Let enemies come to you.
  • Reposition only when you have cover between you and threats, not just terrain colour.

Match the Suit to the Ground, Not the Map

The Erangel ghillie is green, which is useless on a dirt road or a yellow wheat field. Look at what is directly under and around you before you commit to a position.

Watch Your Gun and Backpack

Your weapon still sticks out past your silhouette. A black AKM across a green ghillie on a green field is a straight horizontal line that reads as “player” to a trained eye. If you have the option, pair your suit with weapon finishes that break up the shape, or at minimum angle your gun along your body line when lying prone.

Use Sound Discipline

A ghillie hides your body. It does not hide footsteps, vaulting noises, vehicle engines, or healing animations. If you are hidden and audible, you are just hidden until someone walks the last 15 metres.

When a Ghillie Suit Is Worth the Risk

Dropping on a care package is one of the most dangerous plays in PUBG. Third-partying squads camp airdrops specifically because they know people will push them. Before you commit, ask three questions:

  • How far away is the package? If it landed in the open and you are 300 metres out, assume someone closer is already watching it.
  • What phase are you in? An early-game crate is high risk, low reward. A phase 3 or 4 crate near the circle is often match-defining.
  • Do you already have strong gear? If you have a kitted DMR, a level 3 helmet and vest, and healing stacked, the ghillie is the cherry on top. If you are still looking for a vest, loot a compound first.

The best time to use a ghillie suit is on an open-terrain map in the mid-to-late circles, where positioning in grass or scrub can win fights without ever firing until you choose to. Miramar and Erangel are the classic ghillie maps for this reason.

Common Mistakes We See Players Make

  • Running in a ghillie. You are a moving blob of grass. Walk or crouch.
  • Ghillie prone on a road. The colour does not match. Move three metres into the ditch.
  • Pairing it with a loud vehicle. You rolled up to a fight in a UAZ. The suit does nothing for the next 20 seconds.
  • Thinking it hides your name tag. Teammates and spectators still see you fine; this is purely about enemy vision at distance.
  • Ignoring the minimap. A ghillie buys you concealment, not information. Red dots from gunfire still tell enemies roughly where you are.

Pair the suit with a weapon kit that lets you hold long angles. Our breakdown of the best PUBG weapons and attachments covers which DMR and AR combos work for stationary play.

Ghillie Suit in Competitive and PGC Play

In ranked and competitive PUBG, ghillie suits appear less often than casual viewers expect. Pro squads rarely divert from their rotation to contest a random airdrop, because the time cost of looting a crate in the open usually outweighs the gain. When pros do run ghillies, it is almost always because:

  • The crate dropped inside their rotation path, so looting it cost nothing.
  • The final circles are predicted to pull into open terrain where concealment matters.
  • One player on the squad is designated as the long-range anchor and benefits most from the camouflage.

For viewers, the suit is often a cue: a pro going prone in a ghillie usually means that squad is setting up for a zone hold rather than pushing.

The Bottom Line

The PUBG ghillie suit is a situational power pick, not an upgrade you grab every game. It comes exclusively from care packages, varies visually by map, and only works when you stop moving and let the terrain do the hiding. Get those three things right and a single suit can carry you through two or three fights without an enemy ever locating you.

Next time you hear the plane, check the circle, check the terrain, and check your current loot before you sprint for red smoke. A ghillie you earn on a safe crate wins games. A ghillie you die 40 metres short of does not.
