Dispelled in Dota 2: Strong vs Basic Dispel Explained
Getting a hex, silence or slow dispelled at the right second can flip a fight before it starts. In Dota 2, “dispelled” is not one single effect: there are two levels of it, and most buffs and debuffs are tagged to resist one but not the other. We will break down how dispels work, what strong dispel actually clears, and which items and abilities you should buy or press when a status needs to come off.
What “Dispelled” Means in Dota 2
A dispel removes buffs or debuffs from a unit. That is the simple version. The important version is that every buff and debuff in the game is tagged as dispellable or not, and separately as resistant to basic dispels or not.
That gives you three practical categories:
- Basic dispellable: a Diffusal Blade purge or any ordinary dispel will clear it.
- Strong dispellable: only a strong dispel will clear it. A basic dispel does nothing.
- Undispellable: no dispel of any kind removes it. You wait it out or you die.
The whole mechanic exists so Valve can tune abilities. Weak crowd control gets stripped easily. Hard-earned ultimates and ability-defining debuffs survive almost everything.

Basic Dispel vs Strong Dispel
The difference between the two is which status effects they are allowed to touch. A basic dispel handles the common stuff: slows, silences, most buffs, most ordinary debuffs. A strong dispel goes further and removes the heavy effects on top, like most stuns, roots, hexes and fears.
Here is the quick reference most players actually need.
| Effect | Removed by Basic Dispel | Removed by Strong Dispel |
|---|---|---|
| Most slows | Yes | Yes |
| Most silences | Yes | Yes |
| Most buffs (positive) | Yes | Yes |
| Most stuns | No | Yes |
| Hex (Sheepstick, Lion’s Hex) | No | Yes |
| Roots and leashes | No | Yes |
| Fear and taunt | No | Yes |
| Doom | No | No (undispellable) |
| Shackles channel, Duel, Primal Roar | No | No |
Rule of thumb: if an ability is a hero’s signature “you cannot move or act” effect, it is usually undispellable or strong-only.
Items That Dispel
Items are your most reliable source of a dispel because they do not need an ability slot or mana you cannot spare.
Strong Dispel Items
- Black King Bar does not technically dispel on activation, but Avatar grants magic immunity that blocks and removes most magical debuffs. Treat it as the closest thing to a universal “get it off me” button.
- Aeon Disk triggers at low HP and applies a strong dispel to the holder. It is the single best panic button for carries who get chain-stunned.
- Eul’s Scepter of Divinity cyclones the target, which strong-dispels them. Self-cast it to save yourself from fears, hexes and most stuns.
- Guardian Greaves applies a basic dispel on activation. Not strong, but very broad and it heals the team at the same time.
- Satanic activates Unholy Rage, which strong dispels you on cast. One of the only strong dispels a position 1 reliably carries.

Basic Dispel Items
- Diffusal Blade actively purges a target, which is a basic dispel plus a hard slow against summons and non-ancient creeps.
- Lotus Orb reflects targeted spells and applies a basic dispel to the ally it is cast on.
- Manta Style basic-dispels you on activation and is the single cheapest way to shed silences and most slows while last-hitting.

Abilities That Dispel
Many heroes build a dispel into their kit. Knowing which ones strong-dispel and which do not is draft knowledge, not trivia.
Common Strong Dispels
- Oracle’s Purifying Flames on an ally performs a strong dispel.
- Legion Commander’s Press the Attack strong dispels and gives bonus attack speed, which is why she is such a brutal counter to kiting lineups.
- Abaddon’s Aphotic Shield strong dispels on cast and again when it bursts.
- Juggernaut’s Blade Fury strong dispels him on cast.
- Dark Willow’s Shadow Realm strong dispels her when she emerges.
Common Basic Dispels
- Omniknight’s Purification basic dispels allies hit by the heal.
- Dazzle’s Shallow Grave does not dispel, but Dazzle’s Shadow Wave basic dispels every ally it bounces to.
- Pugna’s Decrepify basic dispels the target, enemy or ally.
Draft takeaway: if you are first-picking a lineup that leans on silences, slows and single-target control, a Legion Commander or Oracle on the enemy team is going to strong-dispel through most of it. Plan around that in captain’s mode.
What Cannot Be Dispelled
Some of the strongest ultimates in Dota 2 are undispellable by design. You cannot BKB or Eul’s your way out of them.
- Doom from the hero of the same name
- Duel from Legion Commander
- Primal Roar from Beastmaster
- Chronosphere from Faceless Void (though you can be magic-immune through it)
- Winter’s Curse from Winter Wyvern
- Most channel-locking effects like Shackles and Fiend’s Grip
If you see one of these on the enemy draft, the counter is not a dispel. It is positioning, status resistance, Linken’s Sphere to block the initial cast, or a save ability that moves you out of range.
Buffs Can Be Dispelled Too
Dispels do not just save you. They are also offensive tools against buffed enemies. Any time an enemy pops a key buff, a dispel on them can delete it.
Examples worth remembering:
- A basic dispel on an Omniknight removes most of his personal buffs and allied Purifications.
- A basic dispel on Juggernaut’s Blade Fury cancels the spin, since the magic immunity is a buff on him.
- Diffusal Blade on a Warlock’s Golem or a Lycan’s Wolves can shred their most important buffs.
- Nyx Assassin and Templar Assassin’s defensive buffs peel off to a basic dispel.
The reason Diffusal Blade is still a core item on several heroes is not the slow. It is that it answers an entire category of problem lineups.
Status Resistance Is Not a Dispel
Players mix these up constantly. Status resistance shortens the duration of debuffs. It does not remove them. A hero with high status resistance from items still eats the full stun, just for less time.
- Dispel: the effect is gone right now.
- Status resistance: the effect ends sooner than it would have.
Both are useful. They stack. But if a teammate pings you asking “can you dispel this”, a Hood of Defiance will not do it.
Practical Buying Guide by Role
Position 1 (carry): Black King Bar is still the default against magical lineups. Pick up Manta Style against silences and slows. Aeon Disk or Satanic come online in longer games against hard lockdown.
Position 2 (mid): Eul’s Scepter self-dispel is one of the cheapest and most flexible pickups in the game. BKB when the enemy has two or more magical disables.
Position 3 (offlane): Lotus Orb and Guardian Greaves double as team utility and personal save. Pipe of Insight does not dispel, but combined with a dispel it saves teamfights.
Positions 4 and 5 (support): Lotus Orb on your carry is often more valuable than one in your own inventory. Glimmer Cape does not dispel, so pair it with an actual dispel source.

Common Mistakes With Dispels
- Buying BKB too late. If their key spell is a hex or a long disable, BKB in slot three usually loses less games than Daedalus in slot three.
- Eul’s into the hex instead of before it. Eul’s cannot be cast while hexed. Use it the moment you see the cast animation, not after.
- Manta against undispellable control. Manta will not save you from Doom or Duel. Save the cooldown.
- Forgetting Diffusal shreds buffs. Against Omniknight, Dazzle or illusion heroes, right-click purges win fights.
- Dispelling a strong effect with a basic dispel. Lotus Orb on your stunned carry does nothing to the stun. It only removes basic debuffs on top.
If you want to test exactly what gets removed in your current patch, hop into a lobby and check the tooltips. Specific effects do get retagged between updates. Our rundown of recent dota 2 patch 7.41e bugs shows how often dispel interactions get rewritten in a single changelog, and the long design history behind these systems lives in our icefrog feature.
The Bottom Line
A debuff gets dispelled when the dispel’s strength matches or beats the effect’s tag. Basic dispels clear ordinary slows, silences and buffs. Strong dispels add stuns, hexes, roots and fears. Undispellable effects do not come off at all. Build your item slots around which category your enemies rely on, not around raw stats.
The next time you load into a game, read the enemy draft before you buy. If their lockdown is magical, Black King Bar wins. If it is a hex or a fear, Eul’s Scepter or Aeon Disk is the answer. If it is Doom, you have to kill him first.
