Butterfly Knife CS2: Skins, Prices & Buying Guide

butterfly knife cs2

The butterfly knife CS2 is the showiest melee in the game, with a flip animation that turned it into a status symbol long before CS:GO ever became CS2. We’re going to walk you through every finish it comes in, which cases drop it, how its animations work, and what to actually look for when you buy one.

What Is the Butterfly Knife?

The butterfly knife, also called a balisong, is a folding melee weapon that opens with a two-handle flip. In Counter-Strike, it is one of the rarest knife models you can pull from a case, and arguably the most iconic.

It was added to CS:GO on July 1, 2014, alongside the release of Operation Breakout. At the time, it was the first knife locked to a specific case, the Operation Breakout Weapon Case, which made early drops wildly valuable.

Today the knife has carried over to Counter-Strike 2 with upgraded models, cleaner inspect animations, and the same cult status it earned a decade ago. You can see every variant on the butterfly knife listings if you want to compare prices and floats side by side.

Which Cases Drop the Butterfly Knife?

The butterfly is a rare special item in several cases. These are the containers that can drop it, grouped by the finish family they introduced:

CaseFinish FamilyNotable Finishes
Operation Breakout Weapon CaseArms DealFade, Slaughter, Case Hardened, Crimson Web, Blue Steel, Night, Stained, Boreal Forest, Urban Masked, Scorched, Safari Mesh, Forest DDPAT
Spectrum CaseChromaDoppler, Tiger Tooth, Marble Fade, Rust Coat, Damascus Steel, Ultraviolet, Lore, Autotronic, Freehand, Bright Water
Operation Broken Fang CaseGamma / ChromaGamma Doppler, Black Laminate

For a deeper breakdown of which containers unbox what, our full guide on cs2 cases with butterfly knife covers every drop pool in detail.

The operation breakout weapon case is the original and still the most sought after for pure nostalgia. The spectrum case brought in the Doppler and Marble Fade variants that collectors chase the hardest.

Every Butterfly Knife Finish

The butterfly knife has grown far beyond its original Arms Deal lineup. Here is the full list of finishes available in CS2:

Arms Deal Finishes (Operation Breakout)

  • Fade: the holy grail, with a pink-purple-yellow gradient along polished steel
  • Slaughter: swirling red marbleized pattern on a mirror blade
  • Case Hardened: unpredictable blue, purple and gold blotches from heat treating
  • Crimson Web: deep red base covered in black web lines, pattern-dependent
  • Night: black oxide finish, the budget tier entry point
  • Stained: brown and dark marbled wash
  • Blue Steel: cold blue-gray gradient
  • Boreal Forest: green camouflage pattern
  • Urban Masked: gray and black urban camo
  • Scorched: burnt black-and-tan grit finish
  • Safari Mesh: tan mesh print
  • Forest DDPAT: woodland digital camo

Chroma Finishes (Spectrum Case)

  • Doppler: four phases plus Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl and Emerald, by far the most hunted
  • Marble Fade: red, blue and yellow swirls, with Fire & Ice as the top pattern
  • Tiger Tooth: gold tiger-stripe polish
  • Damascus Steel: forged layered steel look
  • Ultraviolet: matte purple finish
  • Lore: gold filigree over faded blue steel
  • Autotronic: mechanical black and cyan print
  • Freehand: hand-drawn black line art
  • Rust Coat: oxidized orange-brown
  • Bright Water: blue and white watercolor

Gamma Finishes (Operation Broken Fang)

  • Gamma Doppler: green Phase 1-4 plus Emerald, exclusive to Broken Fang drops
  • Black Laminate: dark wood-grain layered print

Rarity and Drop Odds

Every case in CS2 follows the same rarity curve. Knives, including the butterfly, sit at Covert ★ rarity, which drops at roughly 0.26% per case opening. StatTrak versions are rolled separately at about 10% of knife drops.

We cover the full math in our cs2 knife odds breakdown, but the short version is this: you will open hundreds of cases on average before seeing any knife at all, and the specific finish and float you pull is a second lottery on top.

Butterfly Knife Animations

The butterfly’s inspect animation is why it costs what it does. In CS2, Valve rebuilt knife animations with cleaner motion blur and better hand IK, so the flip looks sharper than it did in CS:GO.

The default inspect does a one-handed open-close flourish, and there is a chance for a longer “rare” animation where the player tosses and catches the blade. Our deep dive on cs2 knife animations breaks down which knives have the longest sequences.

How Much Does a Butterfly Knife Cost?

Pricing swings hard based on three things: finish, float, and StatTrak. Here is a rough tier breakdown of what you can expect in the current market:

TierExample FinishesApproximate Price Range
BudgetNight, Safari Mesh, Scorched, Urban Masked, Forest DDPAT (Field-Tested or worse)$700 to $1,200
MidBoreal Forest, Stained, Blue Steel, Rust Coat, Freehand$1,200 to $2,500
HighCase Hardened, Crimson Web, Slaughter, Ultraviolet, Autotronic$2,500 to $5,000
TopDoppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Lore, Gamma Doppler$4,000 to $10,000+
ChaseFade (100%), Doppler Ruby/Sapphire/Black Pearl/Emerald, Marble Fade Fire & Ice$15,000 and up

Prices move daily. These ranges are a rough starting point, not a quote. For live numbers, the all knives hub tracks current market values across every float.

Pattern Matters More Than Float on Some Finishes

For most skins, float value drives price. The butterfly has several finishes where the pattern index matters more than wear:

  • Fade: patterns closer to 100% show full gradient. 90%+ fades sell at huge premiums
  • Case Hardened: “blue gem” patterns with mostly blue plating hit insane prices, especially Pattern 387 and 442 tier
  • Marble Fade: the Fire & Ice pattern (red tip, blue base, no yellow bleed) is the top of the stack
  • Crimson Web: pattern density determines the “triple web” and “spider web” value tiers
  • Doppler: Phase 2 and Phase 4 generally beat Phase 1 and Phase 3 in resale

Always check the pattern index before buying any of these finishes. A worn-looking knife with a great pattern can cost double a mint knife with a bad one.

Butterfly Knife vs Other Flashy Knives

The butterfly is not the only knife with show-off appeal. Here is how it stacks up against its closest competition:

StatTrak or No StatTrak?

StatTrak adds a kill counter and bumps the price roughly 15 to 30% on common finishes, and more on rare ones. For a knife you plan to actually use, StatTrak is cosmetic since you can see your kills in-game anyway. For resale and flex value, it holds a premium.

One warning: if you ever drop a StatTrak knife to the ground and someone else picks it up and inspects it, the counter does not transfer. You keep the stat on your account.

Buying Tips Before You Pull the Trigger

A butterfly knife is often the single most expensive thing in a CS2 inventory. Treat the purchase like a used-car transaction:

  • Verify the float value: use CS2 inspect in-game, not just the trade preview
  • Check the pattern index: critical on Fade, Case Hardened, Marble Fade, and Crimson Web
  • Check sticker and nametag history: a nametag can mean a hidden float story
  • Compare across markets: Steam Market, third-party sites, and private trades all show different prices
  • Avoid “below market” deals from unknown traders: scams target expensive knives first
  • Wait out hype spikes: prices jump after major Twitch streamers show off a knife

The Bottom Line

The butterfly knife CS2 is a decade-old legend that still sits at the top of the cosmetic pyramid, with over 20 finishes spread across the Operation Breakout, Spectrum, and Operation Broken Fang drop pools. Doppler, Marble Fade and Fade variants hold the top prices, while Night and Safari Mesh give you the model at the lowest entry point.

If you take one thing from this guide, make it this: the finish and pattern matter far more than float on a butterfly knife. Spend an extra ten minutes checking the pattern index before you commit, and you will either save hundreds of dollars or spot a steal that other buyers missed.
